Confused About What Type of Rug to Choose?

Choosing a rug for your home can be a little confusing sometimes. There are so many types so we thought we would explain some of the types available. When you go to purchase your rug keep in mind the area you are using it in. Does it have sunlight directly on it, is it going to be in a heavy traffic area, is in a wet area (bathroom, kitchen, patio).

Hand Made

There are various weaving techniques. Looms are used mostly for this. Some are hand knotted or hand tufted as well. Care must be taken to care for the fibres.

Tufted

Yarn is looped in a U-shape through a backing fabric. The ends are cut even and then may be frayed so are slightly felted. This gives the rug a denser feel. Depending on the quality of the fibre used some are more robust than others.

Hand Knotted

are mostly made with natural fibres- wool and silk is the most common. Some countries can be quite clever with using what is available in their surroundings (eg. Cactus!).

Manmade Fibre

These rugs are quite varied. Most are made from a BCF (Bulk Continuous Filament) fibre. There are many types and some wear better than others. Usually if they are machine made they will be easier to clean.
